Azure-Based HA Messaging Rebuild

Global messaging infrastructure · Azure hybrid architecture

01Challenge

Email is the one system that can never be down. The global messaging infrastructure needed to move from its existing footprint to an architecture designed for high availability from the ground up — resilient across regions, able to absorb failures without users noticing, and built for the hybrid reality of on-premises Exchange working alongside Exchange Online.

02Approach

  • Rebuild, don't patch. Led a ground-up rebuild of the global messaging infrastructure into a highly available Azure-based hybrid architecture, rather than bolting redundancy onto the old design.
  • Virtualize for resilience. Virtualized the Exchange Server 2019 SE systems, gaining the flexibility to move, scale, and recover workloads that physical or rigidly-placed servers couldn't offer.
  • Design for failure. Every layer planned around the assumption that components fail — so the system degrades gracefully instead of going dark.

03Technology

  • Microsoft Azure
  • Exchange Server 2019 SE
  • Hybrid Exchange
  • Virtualization
  • High-availability design

04Outcome

A global messaging platform rebuilt for maximum uptime and resilience — virtualized Exchange 2019 SE running inside an Azure-based hybrid architecture, designed so that individual failures stay invisible to the hundreds of thousands of people depending on it every day.
